INDIA AND BRAZIL-IDIOSYNCRATIC PATHS OF GROWTH.

In this article we will focus on the similarities and dissimilarities between the two BRIC nations. It further focuses at the current problems faced by the economies. Both the nations are similar in many aspects. Liberalization process started almost at the same time. The policy set used by the nations has been more or less similar and now for a very long time they have a stable democratic government. But still brazil has not been as successful as India. Why has brazil not been able to clock high GDP rates as India?

The answer lies in the idiosyncratic paths taken by the two economies. Though they followed similar policies they but they had very different ways of implementing those policies. To throw some light on Brazil’s economic and political background lets quickly go through some key and major build-ups in Brazil’s economy. Brazil got independent in SEP 1822 from Portugal followed by monarchy which was overthrown in 1889. it got over with military dictatorship as late as 1985.Democracy came into existence only after 1985 and re election of Lula Da Silva in 2006 has proved that Brazil has been successful in achieving long sought political stability.

The government has played an important role in Brazil. Much of its success cab be attributed to the intelligent strategies played by the government, in particular those of Fernando Henrique Cardoso which created stable macroeconomic environment in which entrepreneurship could take birth. He as the finance minister controlled inflation hovering around 764%by introducing a new currency-the current real in 1994. the exchange rate peg was abandoned and currency was allowed to free float.

Another feature is that federal and state governments have to run a primary surplus i.e. they used a strategy to live within their means since 1999 which allowed them to get rid of foreign debt which caused volatility and instability. On glancing at the macroeconomic indicators, in recent years Brazil has experienced extreme macroeconomic instability and negligible rate of growth. Brazil has one of the highest economic inequalities in the world as indicated by the high value of the GINI index.

Even India faces high inequality. the per capita income in Maharashtra is thrice that of Bihar. growth of rich states has fast outstripped the negligible improvements of poor states such as Orissa , Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan. As far as population is concerned, India’s population stands at 1.2 billion and Brazil’s at 196.6 million. India’s population grew by 1.4% annually in 2009, while Brazil’s population grew by 1.2%.Both the countries are striving towards lower growth rates, which is necessary for India due to its already large population size, but for Brazil this might turn out to be anti-productive, due to the relatively smaller size of its population, resulting in smaller labour force.

For India the dependency ratio is approximately 0.6, compared to Brazil’s 0.5. But what makes India’s position more favourable is the expectation of this ratio falling considerably over the next 30 years. This is due to the falling fertility rate. Due to high fertility, there is a sizeable chunk of the population in the 0-15 age group, once this bulge moves into the working age category, the relative number of children must be small.

This will lead to the following benefits:-

1.Rise in the relative number of bread winners

2.With fewer children being born, more women will join the work force

3.Rise in savings rate (current 30%), due to lesser children, and more working class

Another distinct demographic advantage that India holds is the population’s comfort level with the English language. This can be attributed to its colonial past. British India left behind an education system with emphasis on the English language which has resulted into a large English speaking middle class. Today this

has translated into a business environment which is conducive for MNC’s, therefore encouraging investments and job creation in India.

India, China, and Russia increased their respective investment shares of GDP over the latest decade- Brazil, too, but at a much slower rate. India has done this mostly through reducing barriers to inward foreign-direct investment.

However, more domestic saving is likely needed in India despite the falling of its consumption share. India reaps greater benefits for each rupee invested, so save more and supplement the inward FDI.

In stark contrast is Brazil, an economy that is clearly saving at a much lower rate than India. The consumption is a large 63.1% of GDP, essentially unchanged over the latest decade. And for a developing economy, the investment share is very low in levels, 16.4% of GDP in 2008 (compared to India's 32.2% share).

In all, the saving and investment story adds up to a level of productive capital stock. Without investment, there is no capital stock growth. And without capital stock growth, there is little productive GDP growth. (SOLOW MODEL)

Brazil's productive capacity per worker is the lowest - with capital stock per worker being quickly outpaced by India, and China. India’s incremental increase in the rate of investment (i.e., the capital stock) could have profound effects on productivity and growth. Here is what the FT says:

“Why is China the “workshop of the world” when Indian labour is even cheaper and her entrepreneurs admired worldwide? There are many reasons, including (until recently) the anti-foreign-trade policies and small-scale industry reservation policies, noted earlier, as well as poor infrastructure in power, roads, water and ports. Perhaps even more important are the restrictive labour laws and certain other regulations, which encourage Indian manufacturing units to “stay small”, thereby forgoing the classic industrial economies of scale and scope.”

With labor reform and ongoing policy focused on domestic investment, India's economy is on a path that should turn up quickly. In accordance with Solow model: low income countries invest in productive capacity, and the growth rates can be quite startling given the base effects.

Brazil, on the other hand, is not setting itself up for sustained growth. The country is now enjoying the economic benefits of policy reform and open capital markets. The next step in Brazil's development is clearly to adopt policies that grow saving and investment.

In Many area’s India and Brazil see eye to eye from a demographic stand point.Both countries have a diverse population, with varied cultures and languages. But, India has one particular USP, it’s potential population dividend, which if reaped successfully by the Indian government, can allow the country to race ahead Brazil.

While researching over the topic I found “Entrepreneurs” are people who create and grow enterprises and “Entrepreneurship” is the process through which entrepreneurs create and grow enterprises. I guess the definition above suits best for a management class or the government files. Personally I feel, “Entrepreneurs” are people who have the passion and zeal to bring a qualitive change in the society through their mind boggling ideas. And, “Entrepreneurship” is a process or more of a pathway which they take to fulfill their dreams.

More than half of the Indian populace live in villages. Indian villages have a huge hidden potential in the fields of traditional arts and crafts, food industry and the like. Most of the rural households are involved in some or the other kind of agricultural service provider units. India's rural economy is primarily agricultural based, but the rapid rise in its population with consequent pressure on land has led the planners to lay greater emphasis on industrial development.

Rural Entrepreneurship may focus on areas like food processing which may include variety of products from various sectors comprising agriculture, horticulture, plantation, animal husbandry and fisheries & marine products. The New Indian Marriage

India is undergoing a trajectory of rapid economic growth, manifesting high consumption patterns, new economic opportunities and upward mobility. Marriage and family, pre-eminent institutions in the personal lives of peoples in most societies, also connect closely with the economy and other processes. However, while economic changes are being extensively researched, concurrent social changes in India have not received the scholarly attention they deserve. Demographic trends, intra- and inter-country migration, economic shifts and processes as well as political, particularly gender struggles are altering the marriage landscape in cultures and societies across the globe.

The Indian subcontinent has historically been home to a wide variety of wedding systems. Some were unique to the region, such as Swayamvara (which was rooted in the historical Vedic religion and had a strong hold in popular culture because it was the procedure used by Rama and Sita). In a swayamvara, the girl's parents broadcast the intent of the girl to marry and invited all interested men to be present in a wedding hall on a specific date and time. The girl, who was also often given some prior knowledge about the men or was aware of their general reputation, would take a round of the hall and indicate her choice by garlanding the man she wanted to marry. Sometimes the father of the bride would arrange for a competition among the suitors, such as a feat of strength, to help in the selection process. Another variant was the Gandharva marriage, which involved simple mutual consent between a man and a woman based on mutual attraction and no rituals or witnesses. The marriage of Dushyanta and Shakuntala was an example of this marriage.

Commonly in urban areas and increasingly in rural parts, parents now arrange for marriage-ready sons and daughters to meet with multiple potential spouses with an accepted right of refusal. These arranged marriages are effectively the result of a wide search by both the girl's family and the boy's family. Child marriages are also in steady decline and deemed unlawful in India (with legal age of marriage at 21 years for men and 18 years for women), so the term marriage now increasingly refers to marriages between consenting adults well past the age of sexual maturity.

It is increasingly common in India for a couple that has met by themselves and are involved romantically to go through the process of an arranged marriage with that specific partner in mind. Since arranged marriages result in a deep meshing and unification of extended families and are believed to contribute to marital stability, many couples orchestrate their marriages with each other through the processes of an arranged marriage. These marriages are often referred to as "self-arranged marriages" or "love-cum-arranged marriages" in India.

This new Indian marriage focuses on emotional fulfilment for both partners, and not merely procreation or recreation. It is owned by both partners in the marriage and not by anyone else. Recognises two sets of personal spaces ('I' spaces) in a marriage, but pays due attention to the marriage space ('We' space) as well. It appreciates that fights, issues and conflicts are inevitable when two individuals engage in a close and intense relationship. Uses rational processes to manage these fights, issues and conflicts. Employs a zero-tolerance policy towards abuse -- whether physical, verbal, sexual or emotional. Pays adequate attention to the experience and expression of sexual and emotional intimacy. Believes that parents and children need their own spaces and that these should rest outside of the marriage space. Work towards transparent and honest communication styles. It does not hesitate to seek professional help when things get sticky between the partners or they find it hard to find solutions to their issues.

Just as we all know, life is not a bed of roses. Things do not work as smoothly as we expect them to. In such circumstances, we often change ways, make compromises, negotiate with the proceedings or sometimes, just stand stubbornly and let things fall apart. Marriage is the most beautiful relationship that happens to everyone at some point of time. The first and the most important tip any erudite person will offer to keep one’s marriage happy and successful is to be open about one’s feelings and desires with your partner. Successful couples talk deeply before the wedding about their expectations of each other. If there's serious disagreement pertaining anything like kids, career, etc. its better to finalize beforehand if it will be a good decision to still marry. "Youth should be given a chance to take an active part in the decision-making of local, national and global levels." - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

On 12 August 2010, United Nations launched the International Year of Youth. Under the theme ‘Dialogue and Mutual Understanding,’ the Year aims to encourage dialogue and understanding across generations and promote the ideals of peace, respect for human rights, freedoms and solidarity.

It also encourages young people to dedicate themselves to fostering progress, including the attainment of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which seek to slash a host of social ills, ranging from extreme poverty and hunger to maternal and infant mortality to lack of access to education and health care, all by 2015.

Therefore, I think there are immense opportunities for youth in globalised world.

Take the example of Mark Zuckerberg, Time Person of the Year 2010 and Founder & CEO, Facebook. His profile says “I'm trying to make the world a more open place by helping people connect and share.” Started as a Harvard College Network in a Dorm. Today, Facebook has over 500 million users and revolutionised our lives. He had a vision and wealth followed.

923 million people – a population twice the size of European Union lives in slums. What does leadership mean to you? Could you leave your job and home? And Make houses for them. Would you start a company that has built homes for 1.5 million people? Millard Fuller. Founder, Habitat for Humanity did.

What could you do with a start up loan and a Bachelor’s degree at age of 21? Could you place 6000 teachers and educate 3 million kids worldwide? Wendy Kopp. Founder, Teach for America and Teach for All did.

The New National Youth Policy recognizes four thrust areas namely, Youth Empowerment, Gender Justice, a Multi Sectoral Approach and emphasis on Information and Research Networks. It has identified the key areas of youth concern like education, training and employment, health, environment, recreation and sports, art and culture, civics and citizenship, science and technology so that attention could be focussed on these areas. The New Youth Policy also endeavours to attach priority to the needs of underprivileged and marginalized youth. The key issues which concern youth are universal in nature. Education, Health, Employment, Drug abuse, Gender equity are some of these.

We are all aware of these challenges and also the possibilities of making a difference if these issues could be tackled successfully. Our experience shows that youth are very responsive to the national challenges- what they need is proper guidance, training and opportunities to channelize their energies. Our thrust is on providing access for youth to education, employment, health and other services to afford them better living conditions. Efforts are being made to provide youth with ample opportunities to develop their skills, capabilities, personality and become good citizens of the country.

Youth in India today, are much more sensitized than before and there is a growing demand for a recognition of their rights. Young people are encouraged to travel within the country as well as to other countries and share their experiences and culture. They are encouraged to understand each others culture and traditions and to develop friendship and peace.

I dream of a world where everyone is able to have enough food, clothing and shelter; receive a decent education; can have access to health care, sanitation and clean drinking water. A world that is committed to economic growth but also attentive to the needs of its poorest and most vulnerable people. A world where everyone is treated with equal dignity, irrespective of their nationality, caste, creed, gender, language, region or disability, A world where merit and integrity are recognized and rewarded.

Yes, that’s Possible. There is a leader in everyone. You just need to realize your potential. I believe in the philosophy of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam – The World is but one family and in order to achieve this we must Think Globally and Act Locally.

Kashmir: The Troubled Frontier

Yesterday, I read a news article about the ongoing debate whether the Kashmir is an integral part of India or not. A noted novelist had made a comment saying Kashmir was never a part of India and now it’s the right time for Indian government to liberate it. This post contains mine observation regarding the mention topic.

Britishers brought in with them a centralized form of governance. They united all big and small princely states under one umbrella; in simple language they unified the great Indian Subcontinent. But, Britishers unlike Mughals never invaded India with a motive of being a part of it; instead they only wanted to loot its immense wealth. They can be compared with modern day Taliban. Only difference was that the Britishers were an organized army of robbers.

So, after World War 2 when the world power scenario changed and it became difficult (almost impossible) to rule India, Britishers came up with a new ideology. They could have transformed the power as was vested in the hands of Britishers. But, they went ahead with a new idea of handing over the power to group of people from each community or religion. It was not just the Britishers but also the Allied forces who never wanted to leave the great Indian Subcontinent. They knew that this land had all the elements to become world power again, which could be a trouble for them in future. As a matter of fact, they still control the politics of some countries of the region like Afghanistan and Pakistan. So, they coined the theory of partitioning the country on religious lines. It was left over to rulers of princely states whether to remain with free India or go with the new state of Pakistan.

Sardar Vallabhai Patel with his group of loyal administrators did a commendable job by making most of the princely states to remain with free India either by using political pressure or by force. But, the Maharaja of Kashmir was an ambitious and very arrogant man. He neither wanted to be a part of free India or the new state of Pakistan. In-fact, he wanted to divide India further by making Kashmir a third country to be formed beside Pakistan. But, soon he realized his mistake when the Mujahedeen backed by the Pakistani army attacked the princely state of Kashmir. He realized that it was better to be a part of a secular India rather than to be a part of a country like Pakistan which was formed on religious grounds. He signed the annexation papers and formally the state of Kashmir became an integral part of the Union of India. Later on, acting like a fatherly figure India gave few chunks of Kashmir to Pakistan in order to calm it down. As it is said, the greediness never goes away, so was the case here; Pakistan from the very moment of its formation wanted Kashmir to be an integral part of it. When it became clear that India has a better military then that of the Pakistan, they went ahead with the new setup. And that was building, supporting and providing logistics for cross border terrorism into the territory of India.

Two points should be made very clear: Firstly, as hyped, if the Kashmir is set free as an Independent country, sooner or later the state of Pakistan back by the China would attack it and would enslave them. In that case only one country, the Union of India, can come to their rescue. Secondly, Kashmir will have to depend on India for its resources and daily needs. They will have to import it from the Indian government. In both the scenario, India can never be detached from Kashmir.

In recent media reports I heard some of the Huriyat leaders crying about the double standard of Indian government for the Kashmir. Indian Government never treated Kashmir as an integral part of India and seen it as an outsider, they said. But, they kept mum on the special privileges and autonomy which only the state of Kashmir gets. They cry about the army Special Power Act but never for once they condemned the militancy. Also, the people who think that partition is only way for a permanent solution of the Kashmir problem must for once look at the state of Pakistan.

Lastly, Kashmir was, is and will always be an integral part of the Union of India.

Wikileaks- An International whistleblower website which publishes leaked documents online and distributes them to various other media organisations. This gives journalists a chance to get suppressed information out in the public domain as safely as possible.

Its founder, Julian Assange’s motivation is “to reform systems where abuses are covered up by officials who classify documents in order to keep politically sensitive information from becoming public.” My support for Wikileaks is majorly based on the following three constructives-

1. My first construct deals with the Freedom of Press

Which in this case is; the right of a press organization to put out just about anything it wants, with no regard as to practical or human consequences. None of the information can be proven false; so libel and defamation laws do not apply. Some countries either have laws or feel free to operate in their self defense regardless of the law. Wikileaks has been blocked, censored, not allowed in some places. But in the majority of the Western world, all the information has been accessible. In fact many print and electronic media have reprinted or broadcast the information Wikileaks has disclosed. In the rest of life if someone accepts stolen merchandise and then distributes it; they can be arrested, tried, and if found guilty, punished. But when it comes to the “Press” those same rules do not apply. The very broad interpretation of the right of a free press has created a situation where the damage done by disclosing private information, never meant for public viewing, is not a responsibility the discloser can be held accountable for; if the discloser is “Press”.

2. My second argument deals with the prevention of injustice through Wikileaks’ disclosures.

There needs to be a stand about justice and I believe that the way to justice is transparency. Wikileaks’ administrators are clear that the end goal is to expose injustices in the world and try to rectify them. Obviously death is a type of injustice, and death during war, especially civilians, is an unjust war. There are numerous cases of what appear to be clear war crimes by US forces, such as the deliberate killing of persons trying to surrender. That is what the site tries to expose to bring about reform. Their core function is to try and achieve proper conduct and save people's lives.

As a result of their disclosures, we've seen legislative consequences, we've seen changes in governance, ministers being fired and so on. Clear cut outcomes. Other outcomes are more diffuse - for example, how a population feels about the progress of a war. It also results in concrete policy changes, but then that’s too hard to correlate.

The vision behind WikiLeaks is really quite ancient. In order to make any sensible decision, you need to know what actually is going on. In order to make any just decision, you need to understand what abuses or plans for abuse are occurring. As history tells us, we can see that big reforms come quickly when the public and decision makers can see what is really going on. The goal is to have a democracy in which the people need to be informed as much as possible.

WikiLeaks doesn’t change the fundamentals of journalism. Rather, it’s a new manifestation of the same journalistic process that needs people to leak and people to dig and people to consume and explain, and people who care enough to find the documents and bring them to light.

Yes this must come in public knowledge after all people around world must unite and fight against any kind of dirty governance.

Wikileaks don't fit any of the categories of types of organizations that we are used to thinking about. They're not really journalists. They're not really hackers. They're not really activists. They are something new.

In conclusion, I hereby re-state my view that Wikileaks is working towards a great cause and is surely going to lead the world in an era of substantial change and better governance. After all, let the Truth be told!

I was just uploading few pictures on my Facebook Account. Phone Rings. Vidhan Calling….. I picked up. Greetings exchanged. Vidhan comes to the point. He says, “Let’s start something big together. It should be sustainable and profitable. Think of something.” He already had his list ready with few probable ventures.

The main challenges ahead were: Lack of Financial & Human Resources, Lack of Experience, Scarce Knowledge about Legal Procedures and Feasibility of those ventures. The other issue facing me was my age. I was a minor, incompetent to enter into any contract.

We discussed almost all dream ventures that night. But, we could not come up with something big. It was 2:30 am. So, I told him, “Let’s go step by step and Start with a Blog.” The work of choosing the name, starting a blog and designing a logo was entrusted to me. Vidhan took up the task of recruiting people to join our venture.

November 2009 – June 2010

After going through various name directories in English, Hindi and Sanskrit – 5 names were shortlisted. “Alexis” meaning Defender and Protector was my first preference. Vidhan also agreed. Blog and Logo were ready in few hours. Our Facebook Page and Blog Team were also ready. The blog started; posts and readers started pouring in from around the world.

Slowly but firmly, Members in our Team, Fans on Facebook Page and Readers on Blog were increasing.

2nd February 2010, we finally purchase a domain name. The website was launched in few days and received a very good response from public.

18th March 2010, I turned 18.

Alexis was becoming a popular brand. People started questioning us about it. We started receiving emails from people congratulating us for this venture. At this point, we realized the need for registration under Law. We considered various options which included LLP, Partnership, Section 25 Company, Private Limited Company, Society and Trust. After studying the Acts governing these forms, we decided that Society was the most relevant form for our organization. The main reasons:

1. Cost Effective. Nominal Registration Fee of Rs. 1000.
2. Procedures under Societies Act, 1860 were very easy to understand and implement.
3. Our objective was Public Service not Profit.

5th June 2010, we celebrated World Environment Day by planting saplings at various places in Eldeco Towne Lucknow. The celebrations were graced by several Professors of IIM Lucknow with their families. Alexis Foundation launched Plant A Tree initiative on this day.

Alexis Communications and Entertainment jointly produced a docudrama and photo-journal titled “Mehek-e-Awadh”. This project aimed to showcase the essence of Lucknow’s Past, Present and Future.

Alexis was featured on All India Radio’s Yuva Vani Programme. I was interviewed by renowned RJ Chetna about our past, present and future initiatives.

Alexis Foundation launched Project Nisalayah – A research project on of RTI Act 2005 Awareness and Implementation of Government Policies & Schemes in Bihar, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

This is another link of man's try to grasp/capture nature in his arms, that he drew a line of time everywhere on earth. Probably, with brood on whether it would be day or night, he will have control over both. But these lines failed in changing the counts of day and night.

Just like day moved on the first notch of history of mankind, night followed. But, today this distance between day and night wants to be contracted and get coalesced and the moment will be the the clash of the titans, the two never winners SPAIN AND NETHERLANDS in the Soccer city stadium of Johannesburg.

Earth is round, it is the power of earth who created day and night, football is also round and it also has power..and today the power of football unlike earth will expunge the distance between day and night for 90mins. Australia will welcome this clash of decades with the rising sun whereas life at Latin America will stay in the afternoon. India with the whole south asia, for whom becoming a part of this huge level is just like a dream which will never come true; will join at midnight.

Hope and a Little Sugar

“Every Child is Special”, quotes the signature line of “Taare Zameen Par”, Yes! Indeed, every child comes off special (pun intended), if one undertakes the task to explore all the genres of job these little ones, aged between 9-14 years, undertake to feed their little stomachs. Starting from the boy who serves tea at the local tea-stall, where we discuss what politics has done to our country; to the girl who accompanies her mother to collect those dirty clothes, which we want pressed and ironed for that 9 a.m interview tomorrow. Wait! How can I forget the guy who cleaned the table after I had lunch from that corner restaurant yesterday, or, the little girl who tried selling me flowers the other day at the traffic signal sounding more convincing than any marketing guru from the best B-schools. They are forced to explore every possible form of employment than any adult could ever think of, dispensing duties with the added qualities of innocence, dedication and loyalty, including underlying intelligence of sharp salesman. But strangely, one tiny question sets the tiny feet scurrying “Beta, school jate ho??”

One doesn’t necessarily need to bend heads over daily newspapers or be a social reformer to notice the examples cited above. However, situations still remain the same in the era of ‘so called’ ”Mordern, Developed society of 21^st Century”. What’s holding us back then? “Awareness”. Is that the word? I don’t think so.

The Indian youth appears sensitive when questioned about Child Rights. They could cry out loud for, whoever cares to listen about their knowledge on, Child Rights. They would meekly define “Article 21A of the Indian Constitution provide rights for free compulsory education to children between 6-14 years of age”; they would argue whether or not the above is a fundamental right, or criticize the governments undertaking for promoting the said over a round of coffee.

The “idiot box” as everybody sarcastically claims the modern day television to be, has never reacted more sensibly when it comes to promoting Child Rights and thereby negates the tag. Starting from the daily soap “Uttaran” telecasted on “Colours” at peak show-time hours; the advertisements of “Sharva Sikhsha Abhiyan” showing up itself at every alternative 15 minutes; the heart-throb singers of the nation Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy singing to the lyrics of “School Chale Hum” blasting itself on different music channels; to mini television commercials of “Minu and her Parrot” being aired on Doordarshan National; From Urban to Rural India, from pay channels to “Doordarshan National”, India at large stares and grasps knowledge on Child Rights through television.

The Big corporate market doesn’t lack behind. Companies like Procture and Gamble, ITC to name a few, shares the spirit as well. ITC officials say “There are still millions who only dream of school, ITC is helping some of them realize this dream”. Here the modus operandi is that, when one purchases any item from the brand, certain amount is donated to the rural development initiative that supports, among others, primary education in villages. Even in precedent years a popular soap brand came up with a scholarship scheme having the campaign theme “school jayega?”

Therefore probably, “Awareness” is no longer the word that explains the ignorance of the millions of educated Indians, who exercise their voting rights and feel that’s the only right to be exercised to qualify themselves as responsible citizens. The word this time is “Initiative”.

Knowledge is of no use if it is not cultivated for the betterment of the society, Education in itself has no value if it does not manifest itself in the form of “Development”. In India “Child Rights” still remains a concept of “Extravagant Eccentricity”, the “hope” in those little eyes had been added by the numerous NGO’s and guardian angels who had touched their dreams and promised them to turn into realities, its time to add the “little sugar”- a little contribution with a little initiation. It can be realised by teaching one unfortunate street kid, or by standing up and protesting when you see a kid cleaning your table the next time you have lunch, it can be by getting yourself engaged with an NGO and join the motion or simply by walking upto the adults in slum and making them realize an educated son/ daughter makes more money in the long run than an illiterate one. Even the rise of one person can make a difference against insurmountable odds. It has been long since we have watched things happen and wondered how they happen, its time we stand up and make things happen.

Corporal Punishment in the name of DISCIPLINE

We live in a society. Our action may be prolific to us or may avail benefit to us but at the same time those very actions may be detrimental to the other. So, in order to avoid such clashes, the society creates norms, rules and laws which are backed by sanctions. As the sanctions are imposed people are compelled to follow them. This is in order to maintain peace and avoid a state of ‘anarchy’. Therefore, it becomes requisite for everyone to know the laws, the norms and rules of the society. This in short this is called ‘Socialization’. To become a socialized civilians one must learn etiquettes, mannerisms and courtesies from two social groups, one being the primary group which is the family and the secondary group which are school, peers and other acquaintances. Therefore in order to avoid deviance one has to be socialized and then only one can be ‘disciplined’.

The red hot topic of today’s India, the Global Changing India, is that is corporal punishment ‘justifiable’? Is it ‘reasonable’ to give corporal punishment to those who tend to become deviant or need to be disciplined? As the bone of contention is related to the corporal punishment so it is mandatory for the reader to know what is corporal punishment. Corporal punishment is the deliberate infliction of pain as retribution for an offence, or for the purpose of disciplining or reforming a wrongdoer, or to deter attitudes or behaviour deemed unacceptable. The term usually refers to methodically striking the offender with an implement, whether in judicial, domestic, or educational settings. Elucidating further in simple words, corporal punishment is the physical punishment by thrashing, or battering the deviant in order to inflict some semblance of discipline.

In today’s scenario if we switch on our television sets then the news of an unfortunate demise of a young boy of Kolkatta would be highlighted. The incident that took place was that the young boy of age 13 was ‘caned’ unreasonably just because he was not disciplined. Then the boy committed suicide. Now his family is traumatized, their hearts are filled with anguish and want the culprit to be identified and punished. The irony of the situation is that it’s not only this time it has happened. It has happened, it is happening and it will surely happen in the future if we do not step up right now. There are many lamented, perplexed and helpless parents in each and every city whose children have been a victim of this disease, ‘corporal punishment’. Now, with the help of Media and some enlightened people these incidents are being cropped up and hence leave no chance for the offender to clean it under the carpet. Therefore it now becomes mandatory for us to let our young ones know about the corporal punishment and the Rights which they possess against the offender. In almost every case whenever the students are battered and bruised for the purpose of making them disciplined, they adjust with the situation by sub-consciously accepting that they are the teachers and they have a right to beat us. This age old shackle and orthodox view has deterred the mind-set of the children.

Hence we shall now discuss the legal perspectives of corporal punishment and make the youth and the upcoming youth of India aware of the remedies that they have. Section 88 of the Indian Penal Code protects an act which is not intended to cause death, done by consent in good faith for person's benefit. Therefore a headmaster beating a child with bona fide intentions as to make him disciplined with reasonableness is acceptable and is not a crime. But once it is proved that it is unreasonable or such perpetration was done with malafide intentions then the headmaster can be held liable and this very act will be considered as crime. Section 89 of Indian Penal Code protects an act by guardian or by consent of guardian done in good faith for benefit of child under 12 years. However the same section says that this exception will not extend to cause death, or attempting to cause death, causing grievous hurt. These provisions extend to teachers having quasi-parental authority i.e., consent or delegation of authority from parents also, of course, with exceptions. Using excessive force, causing serious injury, purpose being very unreasonable can turn the act of the guardian or teacher with the consent of guardian, an offence, because such incidents are outside the scope of "good faith".One more provision is the Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000 which says that “Whoever, having the actual charge of or control over, a juvenile or the child, assaults, abandons, exposes or willfully neglects the juvenile or causes or procures him to be assaulted, abandoned, exposed or neglected in a manner likely to cause such juvenile or the child unnecessarily mental or physical suffering shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or fine, or with both”. The purpose of this Act is to put behind bars all the offenders whole subject themselves in giving corporal punishment and as a layman can see that this section unlike the Indian Penal Code does not grant any relief to the perpetrator.An international Convention was also enacted in the favour of Children being subjected to corporal punishment. This is Convention on Rights of Child, 2009. Article 28(2) Convention on Rights of Child 1989 indicates that the school discipline should be administered in a manner consistent with the child's human dignity and the Convention. Article 28 says the education is a right and Article 29 says that the purpose of school education should be to assist the child in developing his or her personality talents, mental and physical abilities to their fullest potential. Article 3, 18 and 36 of the Convention deal with parental and adult responsibility in the private sphere and the right to protection from exploitation. Article 19 provides for measures to protect children against all forms of physical abuse and imposes an obligation on member states to protect children from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse. Moreover the Supreme Court of India has banned corporal punishment from December 1st, 2000.

In the Indian Laws there is a very ambiguous term called ‘criminal liability’. The principle that this term revolves is a latin Maxim “actus non facit reum, nisi mens sit rea". It means that ‘to make one liable, it must be shown that act or omission has been done which was forbidden by law and has been done with guilty mind.’ Therefore if such act of corporal punishment is perpetrated then it is necessary for the prosecution to prove that it was unreasonable and was done with a ‘guilty mind’. Once it is proved then the culprits cannot escape from the claws of the Law.

In the light of the said contentions and views one must have a crystal clear idea of what actually are we dealing with. There is a saying that “Spare a rod and spoil the child”. Due to this reason and this saying the schools and colleges have been reluctant to totally abandon this trend of corporal punishment. But one must realize that here no one want’s to spare the deviant but rather socialize him. The current proverb should be ‘Mould the rod and Socialize the Child’. This is because if one has to give any shape to the rod he definitely has to melt it and then give the shape as per his convenience. The deviant child being that very rod is to melted, that is, he should realize that he is going against the norms of the society and once he realizes it we can definitely mould his attitude, mannerisms, etiquettes and make him a socialized person. Then only we can get rid of Corporal Punishment.

Right to Life: A right in dark

Death is the termination of biological function that defines a living organism. Death refers to that particular moment of time when a person terminates his/her life. In that way he ceases the circle of life, placing a full stop to all his pleasures and pain. Death is the counterpart of life. Life is conferred upon us by the almighty. But life is not all about survival and existence. Merely breathing can’t be defined as living. Despite the fact that we as an entity are a product of god, but our right as a human being are recognised by the law of the state. Article 21 of the Constitution of our Country has been used in a very creative way to improve the quality of life of the citizens.

Article 21 of our Constitution is just like a tree from where we derive a bundle of rights in the form of fruits. Right to life refers to that way of living where the head is held high with dignity. In Francis Coralie vs. Union Territory of India, Honourable Supreme Court held that Right to Life includes Right to live with human dignity and all that goes along with it i.e. the bare necessities of life such as adequate nutrition, clothing and shelter. Thus the main essence of Article 21 is that living cannot be taken as animal living.

Death or Euthanasia is sought only when a human being lives in a very tough and challenging situation, from where his chances to come back the regular course of life are very bleak. Euthanasia is a procedure of killing a human being whose suffering is very painful and incurable.

When a person is suffering from a deadly disease which is incurable and unresponsive to treatment then his Right to Life i.e. go ahead with a life which is supplemented by dignity is infringed. Situation comes forth where the incurability of the disease of the patient not only becomes a cause of severe pain to the patient but moreover also becomes a burden for their families. Medical and pathological treatment in 21st century has made some huge leaps, but still there are certain hazards which come in the form of diseases which are incurable.

A patient surviving just because of the life supporting intensive care units cannot said to be living i.e. life with dignity. Patients suffering from cancer have to bear with intolerable pain and to prevent this pain sophisticated pain management devices are brought into use. This phenomenon is very expensive and poses ample amount of financial burden upon the family members of the patient.

Thus, in the above mentioned horrid situation when there is not even a pinch of hope left, Euthanasia is the only way out. The only solution is to withdraw the life supporting units and pain management device. This action further assists in liberating the soul of the sufferer and this may be rightly remarked as ‘Death with Dignity’.

Kanchan Devi has been in coma since 1999. Her family has pleaded for euthanasia but the court has declined their appeal. In another part of the world, Terri Schavio, a patient in vegetative state was given the permission for dignified death by the U.S Supreme Court. Here in India the appeal by the family members of the patient has been rejected by the Bihar High Court. Kanchan’s family members put forth the argument that since there is no cure for the disease from which Kanchan is suffering, the permission for euthanasia should be granted.

Aruna Shanbaug, a former nurse, has been brain dead and paralysed for the last 36 years after she was raped in November 1973 in Mumbai. Now, writer Pinki Virani, has approached the Supreme Court seeking respite for her and has appealed that Aruna be allowed to die. This time the family and friends of the victim are waiting for are positive reply from the honourable court. They say that since she is brain dead and surviving just because of the forced food, she can’t be to be living but just existing.

Today when the scientists are trying to find out ways to induce life into the non-living, seeking permission for euthanasia for such patients who are not living but just existing cannot at all be regarded as unjustifiable. When countries like Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland which are having better medical science facilities than India have legalised euthanasia and assisted suicide, it is a matter of ponderance that why our country is not legalising it and moreover imposing more troubles and pain to the family members and the patient respectively.

Love—Express and Implied

Pre-Script—Love here is the general feeling felt in any relationship and not specific to romantic ones.

I would be focusing neither on the definition or the philosophy of love, but on the expression of love. Let the foolish task of analysing and defining love, be left to the philosophers.

Expression or conveying your love, I would call it, though seems a child's play, is indeed a difficult task. Relationships survive or sometimes even break due to this simple to understand but difficult to grasp and follow art. This art of conveying ones emotions to the the other person is an in-born quality in human beings but as many other innate qualities, it is underestimated and ignored.

This art of conveyance is made up of two parts. Express and Implied. Express means with the help of words oral or written and Implied means through the conduct or actions. Both of these elements of conveyance are equally important and supplement each other in different ways in different situations. For instance saying I love you to your wife or girlfriend is the express form of conveyance. Whereas caring for your mother and doing the household chores on her behalf is the implied form of love. Both these forms carry out the tasks of conveying your love to the person as you want in accordance to that situation. But the above indicated situations are just a simple condition prevailing for a short time in our daily life. But what about the long process of building and developing a relationship? Do these forms of conveyance help also in this long process independently as they did in the above mentioned examples? The answer is obviously a big NO!!!

Actions speak louder than words they say. But they haven't said that words don't speak at all. Its just that actions being overly expressive speak louder. But even actions are worthless without word accompanying them when it comes to conveying love in complex relationships. For well again take the example above. A man expresses his love by saying “I Love You” to his wife once when he wakes up, second time when he leaves for work, then he calls her from work to sat it. When he returns home he says it again and when they go to bed, he says the three golden words again. One should remember that overuse of these three golden words give them the position of bronze in a persons heart. Also this man, never gifts his wife anything, never kisses her goodbye when leaving for work, the wife can not even expect a small card from him. Now you tell me, if his actions are so contrary to what he says, will his “I Love You” carry any importance for his wife other than dry words of compassion that does not exist. So words should always be complemented by actions. Express and implies forms are those ingredients that if used in perfect balance will enhance the taste of love in the relationship. But if used in a faulty quantity and in perfect imbalance they shall ruin the desert called compassion. Even strong actions only are not enough. Actions can sometimes be ignored, underestimated or can go unnoticed. For instance in many relationships, then may it be a parent-child relation or a romantic relation, or may it be friendly relation, disputes usually occur as actions not accompanied by words go unnoticed.

For example, a lot of people have complaints that I have made so many sacrifices for my friend yet he considers me worthless and does not care for whatever I have done for him/her. My first question to such people is that whether the other person was aware of the sacrifices at the time when they were done? The answer is always no. They try to convince me that in friendship one should understand and consider all such sacrifices even if they aren't expressed. Also people tell me that they mentioned about these sacrifices when he dispute took place. First of all, I would like to tell all such people that the other person is not a born telepathy expert to understand and consider things that he/she is completely unaware of. The rule is simple, if you do not care to tell the other person about your losses no one else is going to do it for you. Secondly when you say that he should at-least consider the actions when they were disclosed during the dispute, Ill ask you that when you are agitated will you try and to listen to or consider the words or actions of the person who is the cause of your agitation? You will certainly not. Thirdly you should not ignore the fact that there may be similar unexpressed and unnoticed sacrifices on the part of the other person. So do not be ashamed of conveying your love in form of sacrifices through words. Do not feel egoistic or selfish about expressing them. Because ego or selfishness comes out of the pride that you feel for you sacrifices and Love comes out of the craving of sharing the fact of sacrificing with someone which is perfectly natural.

So use both the forms, express and implied, of conveying love, in a balanced and wise manner to develop a relationship and grow in it.......

INTEREST BEFORE TALENT
Hire those who are interested in your idea and believe in your vision against those who are merely talented. People can be groomed to meet your needs, provided they have the interest. However, the reverse is not always possible. Also, the chances that interested people will stick around are higher. The low employee turnover serves two crucial purposes. First, it brings down cost. When someone quits, the process of hiring a replacement is expensive and time-consuming. Second, it protects the team’s morale. PERCEPTIONS MATTER
If somebody feels imported products are good, no matter how much the Indian version improves, they will never be ‘at par’. That’s the potency of perception. High Sugar Prices: Profiteering From Artificial Scarcity - Consumer Fooled and Looted

While you continue to pay through the nose for sugar, 11 lakh tonnes of the daily sweetener have been lying at the Kandla port for six months.

So why is the sugar lying unused when it can easily be released in the open market to cool off flaring prices? The answer is simple: it happens so that sugar companies can line their pockets with gold.

Sugar, in both processed and raw form, has been lying at Kandla without being released into the market.The major perpetrators are the big fishes in the market.

The biggest stocker of sugar when asked the question about the unused stocks blamed the logistics at kandla for poor sugar movement.

But six months is not a short period of time, especially when in that time the prices have gone through the roof.

The huge quantities of imported sugar is lying unused in the docks.

These companies now stand accused of hoarding sugar and profiteering. They release sugar in small quantities into the market because freeing this stock would push prices significantly down.

But what the companies cannot deny are the sky rocketing profits that they have reaped due to rising sugar prices.

Till December 31, 2009, the combined profit of the 33 big sugar companies was to the tune of Rs 901 crore. That's a mind-boggling 2,900 per cent jump from last year when their profit was just Rs 30 crore.

Renuka Sugar's 3rd quarter profits suddenly shot up from Rs 23 crore to Rs 61 crore. Balrampur Chini's results also show a similar jump from Rs 51.29 crore to Rs 76.55 crore.

Triveni Sugar's profits leapt almost 200 per cent from Rs 23.98 crore to Rs 72.94 crore.

What further reinforces the suspicion is the fact that companies like Bajaj Hindustan, Kothari Sugar and Simbhaoli Sugar were in the red in 2008. But in 2009, they were suddenly back in the black.

It is obvious that while the common man was taken for a ride, the big sugar companies were laughing all the way to the bank....a few disturbing questions are raised:

Should every College be Co-educational?

Co-education is a system of educating boys and girls together. In ancient times, co-educational colleges were prevalent in Greece. There was no discrimination between boys and girls. They studied and played together. Along with academic education, physical training was also given to both the sexes. Plato, the Greek philosopher, believed that co-education helped in the development of personality of both men and women and created a feeling of comradeship among them. He felt that co-education was the only method to make both men and women useful members of society. Hence, in the west, the importance of co-education has been felt since ancient times.

In early Vedic Society (Ancient India), co-education was prevalent in a few places. But gradually female education began to be ignored. Moreover, the system of education was quite different from that of today. The boys stayed in Gurukuls, for the whole educational period. There they received both academic education and physical training. The former included the study of the scriptures and the latter, training in warfare. Girls were not sent to the Gurukuls, and thus were deprived of the benefits of education. In medieval India, those belonging to lower castes and the girls were not allowed to attend schools and colleges. Raja Rammohan Roy, great social reformer and scholar, fought against this practice and succeeded in his mission. His job was further carried on by other social reformers.

Today, co-education is prevalent in almost all the countries of the world. In India, there are a number of co-educational schools, colleges and universities. It is my experience that friendships develop in a very natural way in co-educational colleges. This happens because there are so many activities, societies and clubs in the colleges in which girls and boys take part in a pleasant, well-supervised environment. Friendships develop naturally and genuinely because the mixing is a by-product of the event. This friendly atmosphere continues into the classroom allowing young people to express their views openly and assertively. For both girls and boys, co-education provides a more realistic way of training young people to take their places naturally in the wider community of men and women. It helps to break down the misconceptions of each sex about the other and provides an excellent foundation for the development of realistic, meaningful and lasting relationships in later life. A co-educational college is also very successful in challenging sexist attitudes. Many subjects in college allow for considerable classroom discussion and debate. In a co-educational college both the female and male perspectives will be explored in such discussions and this is a very important learning experience for all.

Advocates of single-sex colleges sometimes make hefty claims about the academic advantages of such colleges, pointing to statistically significant disparities in examination results. In truth such differences may be due more to the socio-economic background of the pupils at the college or the selectivity of the intake. Co – educational colleges are considered better from social point of view because such places of education gives an opportunity to understand each other's problems and, therefore, can co-operate better in achievement of respective goals.

A healthy spirit of working and competing is created by co – educational colleges. The boys try to keep a polite and gentle character so as to give a good impression to their girls class - fellows. During their long period of education, they can better understand each other's psychology. The boy and girl educated together make the best match due to their broad attitude towards life and closer understanding of each other's habits and manners of living, likes and dislikes. Co-educational colleges generate harmonious relationship, a sense of co-operation, and thus, help in the progress of the nation. There are a number of advantages in the co-educational system of education. It is economical, poor countries cannot afford to open separate colleges for boys and girls. If boys and girls are taught together in the same college, then there will be no need to open separate colleges for them. Thus, the cost to be incurred on building infrastructure, furniture, stationery, personnel recruitment, etc. will be saved. There is acute shortage of good trained teachers in developing countries like India. If there is co-education, same staff can teach both boys and girls at the same time in the same class, and the problem of shortage can be dealt with. Establishing more of co-educational colleges can help in spreading literacy even with the limited teaching staff and infrastructure. Thus, it will be beneficial for both boys and girls and the nation as a whole. They become more broad-minded and tolerant towards the opposite gender. They interact freely with one another, thereby overcoming hesitation and shyness. The feeling of male dominance may be wiped out from the society if this system of education is given importance.

It should be acknowledged that in the fast changing society of twenty first century co-educational colleges have become the order of the day. Today girls are entering all professions in large numbers. Many of them are heading big organizations. Co-educational colleges will help young boys and girls to mix freely and understand one another better. Today's children are tomorrow's citizens. We must encourage them to develop their personality in a free healthy atmosphere. Girls no more have to remain confined to the four walls of the house. Co-educational colleges will help both sexes to learn and work together for the progress of the country. So, all colleges should be co-educational.

26/11 Revisited

Last November, 2 rubber dinghies carrying ten Lashkar-e-Taiba "fidayeen" armed with assault rifles and explosives nudged up along the shoreline of Mumbai.Scores of people died and more than 300 were injured in the carnage that followed.

The sheer suddenness of the attack magnified the destruction and havoc wrought by the terrorists. As the terrorists plunged into a killing spree stray bullets struck innocent lives.Remembering the brutality,the countless tears, the eye sore presented by the heap of dead loved ones, the mutilated bodies, the cries of the injured, one can still hear the cracking sound of the bullets, fired at the CST station, resounding in our ears. One can only imagine the trauma the hostages underwent for over sixty hours.

Thousands of lives were affected and they continue to bear the brunt even now,one year later. To the injured it not only meant the end of earning days but also an end to the dream to earn better.Children have been marred forever.They have to be assured when the nightmare still flashes before their eyes at night or they fear the sound of firecrackers.

Policemen were called to duty, unrealised by their families or them the enormity of the situation.The situation produced such heroics out of them that will not be forgotten by the masses so easily. Inspiring acts of gallantry and sacrifices made by the security personnnel like the late Hemant Karkare to the constable who charged towards an armed terrorist and thus,brought an end to the ruthless firing, ellicit a salute from all of us.But life goes on and the family members of the dear ones lost in the shocking siege have started picking up their lives.

The 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks were expected to make a turning point in the global struggle against terrorism.The outrage expressed by people, the media and political leaders were profound and it raised the hope that Nov, 26 would mark the end of terrorism.But the legal proceedings against the terror suspects are still in the pre-trial stage in Pakistan.

In the pasing months evidence has been mounting that Pakistan investigators have failed to act against the key perpetrators and, worse, may have colluded in effort to help them evade justice. But have we,Indians, learnt our lesson?Have all the promises made to us been fulfilled?It is time each one of us asked these questions to ourselves.Have we succeeded in punishing promptly those involved in hatching, facilitating, or orchestrating the atrocity?...

The lone surviving terrorist caught Mohammed Ajmal Amir "Kasab" is yet to be sentenced.On the contrary, money from our pockets are being spent to ensure his safety and health. On the other hand, the government has taken steps in the aftermath of 26/11.Money has been invested to upgrade the equipment and train personnel specialised to act spontaneously to an attack like 26/11. The tragic Mumbai attack in 2008, unfortunately, derailed the Indo-Pak peace process in its wake and let the terrorist succeed in their motive to disrupt peace in South Asia.

The savage four day assault forged a concensus about the kind of threat that all Pakistan based militant groups posed to the international community.Whether India and her partners will be able to develop the necessary collective tools to temper the threat posed by Lashkar and its fellow groups remain to be seen.However, India is not alone in this sanguinary struggle.The Lashkar and other groups are not just India's problem, rather, they are the problem of the entire international communiy which in the wake of Mumbai has embraced this challenge.

I don't understand what proof do you want to sentence people who are responsible for around half a dozen shooting/bombing attacks, resulting in the death of about 200 people and injury to 300. Its been an year since the Mumbai terror attacks, and what progress has been made till date? What did we get out of the attacks?

A sense of insecurity amongst the citizens and a 22-year old militant, Ajmal Amir Kasab, who was sent on a mission to kill innocent people, as a part of the so called Jihad and in return of a sum of Rs. 1.5 lacs. Ajmal hails from a very poor family and apparently did all this just for money. As he was taught by his miliant fathers, Jihad means, "Come, kill and die after a killing spree. By this one will become famous and will also make Allah proud". Indeed it is very different from what Islam actually teaches.

But Ajmal is not the only one. There are many other terrorists in the making who are misguided by others in the name of God. They are told that they will serve God and help their families by doing Jihad. All terrorist groups work like this only. They capture illiterate minds and teach them wrongdoings.

As of Ajmal, he is still with the Mumbai police and is waiting for a decision by the Indian government. Though the government of India handed out Rs. 4 lacs and Rs. 40000 respectively for the families of the dead and the injured, a human's life cannot be substituted by money. Those who narrowly escaped death must be happy today, but what about them who didn't. Their families are still question the government over the security issues in the country. And those who just watched it over the television again and again have now got familiar with such attacks and have accepted to live with it (thats pretty unfortunate).

Media made the maximum out of it, by repeatedly telecasting the same news and filling their pockets (Max TRP rating in 2008 for India TV on 27th Nov 2008 because they recieved 2 calls from the terrorists trapped inside the Hotels. Courtesy: Google Trends). Film directors made a few movies on this topic and made huge profits. But that's their job. So, no comments.

It happened in Mumbai. It happened in New Delhi. It happened in Ahmedabad. It happened in Bangalore.... And the list goes on and on. I ask you, do you feel safe in your country? Do you ever ponder over the fact that it can happen again?

Concentration And Breathing

The main difference between men and the animals is the difference in their power of concentration. All success in any line of work is the result of this. Everybody knows something about concentration. We see its results every day. High achievements in art, music, etc., are the results of concentration. An animal has very little power of concentration. Those who have trained animals find much difficulty in the fact that the animal is constantly forgetting what is told him. He cannot concentrate his mind long upon anything at a time. Herein is the difference between man and the animals — man has the greater power of concentration. The difference in their power of concentration also constitutes the difference between man and man. Compare the lowest with the highest man. The difference is in the degree of concentration. This is the only difference.

Everybody's mind becomes concentrated at times. We all concentrate upon those things we love, and we love those things upon which we concentrate our minds. What mother is there that does not love the face of her homeliest child? That face is to her the most beautiful in the world. She loves it because she concentrates her mind on it; and if every one could concentrate his mind on that same face, every one would love it. It would be to all the most beautiful face. We all concentrate our minds upon those things we love. When we hear beautiful music, our minds become fastened upon it, and we cannot take them away. Those who concentrate their minds upon what you call classical music do not like common music, and vice versa. Music in which the notes follow each other in rapid succession holds the mind readily. A child loves lively music, because the rapidity of the notes gives the mind no chance to wander. A man who likes common music dislikes classical music, because it is more complicated and requires a greater degree of concentration to follow it.

The great trouble with such concentrations is that we do not control the mind; it controls us. Something outside of ourselves, as it were, draws the mind into it and holds it as long as it chooses. We hear melodious tones or see a beautiful painting, and the mind is held fast! We cannot take it away. If I speak to you well upon a subject you like, your mind becomes concentrated upon what I am saying. I draw your mind away from yourself and hold it upon the subject in spite of yourself. Thus our attention is held, our minds are concentrated upon various things, in spite of ourselves. We cannot help it.

Now the question is: Can this concentration be developed, and can we become masters of it? The Yogis say, yes. The Yogis say that we can get perfect control of the mind. On the ethical side there is danger in the development of the power of concentration — the danger of concentrating the mind upon an object and then being unable to detach it at will. This state causes great suffering. Almost all our suffering is caused by our not having the power of detachment. So along with the development of concentration we must develop the power of detachment. We must learn not only to attach the mind to one thing exclusively, but also to detach it at a moment's notice and place it upon something else. These two should be developed together to make it safe.

This is the systematic development of the mind. To me the very essence of education is concentration of mind, not the collecting of facts. If I had to do my education over again, and had any voice in the matter, I would not study facts at all. I would develop the power of concentration and detachment, and then with a perfect instrument I could collect facts at will. Side by side, in the child, should be developed the power of concentration and detachment. My development has been one-sided all along I developed concentration without the power of detaching my mind at will; and the most intense suffering of my life has been due to this. Now I have the power of detachment, but I had to learn it in later life. We should put our minds on things; they should not draw our minds to them.

We are usually forced to concentrate. Our minds are forced to become fixed upon different things by an attraction in them which we cannot resist. To control the mind, to place it just where we want it, requires special training. It cannot be done in any other way. In the study of religion the control of the mind is absolutely necessary. We have to turn the mind back upon itself in this study.

In training the mind the first step is to begin with the breathing. Regular breathing puts the body in a harmonious condition; and it is then easier to reach the mind. In practicing breathing, the first thing to consider is Âsana or posture. Any posture in which a person can sit easily is his proper position. The spine should be kept free, and the weight of the body should be supported by the ribs. Do not try by contrivances to control the mind; simple breathing is all that is necessary in that line. All austerities to gain concentration of the mind are a mistake. Do not practice them.

The mind acts on the body, and the body in its turn acts upon the mind. They act and react upon each other. Every mental state creates a corresponding state in the body, and every action in the body has its corresponding effect on the mind. It makes no difference whether you think the body and mind are two different entities, or whether you think they are both but one body — the physical body being the gross part and the mind the fine part. They act and react upon each other. The mind is constantly becoming the body. In the training of the mind, it is easier to reach it through the body. The body is easier to grapple with than the mind. The finer the instrument, the greater the power. The mind is much finer and more powerful than the body. For this reason it is easier to begin with the body.

The science of breathing is the working through the body to reach the mind. In this way we get control of the body, and then we begin to feel the finer working of the body, the finer and more interior, and so on till we reach the mind. As we feel the finer workings of the body, they come under our control. After a while you will be able to feel the operation of the mind on the body. You will also feel the working of one half of the mind upon the other half, and also feel the mind recruiting the nerve centres; for the mind controls and governs the nervous system. You will feel the mind operating along the different nerve currents.

Thus the mind is brought under control — by regular systematic breathing, by governing the gross body first and then the fine body. The first breathing exercise is perfectly safe and very healthful. It will give you good health, and better your condition generally at least. The other practices should be taken up slowly and carefully.

HARMONY

Harmony means internal calm or interweaving of different accounts into a single narrative for the purpose of showing agreements. It suggests that peace is the foundation of happiness. God has created everything in the world but people don’t understand this. God is one but people give different names like Allah, Bhagwan, God, Wahe-Guru etc. and start quarrelling amongst themselves. The result is – complete loss of harmony.

In the first half of the 20^thCentury, there have been two major wars. The First World War in 1914 and The Second World War in 1938. These wars occurred because people did not understand the meaning of harmony in real sense and fought against each other. The two wars brought large scale destruction and misery. People learnt the hard way that the best way is to follow the policy of peaceful coexistence and live in harmony which is eternal and everlasting.

Nowadays, the greatest fear that humankind is facing are the devices of self destruction. This dreadful philosophy can’t be overlooked in the race for power and unhindered growth of nuclear weapons. Press of a button in the wave of discontent may result in the destruction of an entire nation. Chemical and Biological weapons may cause thousands to perish without a cry.

The time has come when we need to make a world order full of understanding and compassion, devoid of violence and hatred. For that we need to make the public opinion that humanity is safe only and only when we develop tolerance and resolve our differences through dialogues and other democratic means.

In relation to people my cherished dream is:

In ancient times, the greatest minds which have controlled and changed the destinies of nations and societies have been those of Krishna, Buddha and Jesus. The name of Mahatma Gandhi can be counted in the same line in modern times. All four have been unique in the way that they never raised single weapon. It was the power of the spirituality with which they faced the whole world and transformed the societies to follow the path of Dharma- the virtues.

We need to develop a sense of openness and respect for others views. We had the openness of views even in ancient times. Following shloka gives the gist of that philosophy:

“Ayam nijah paroveti garna laghuchetsam,

Udar charitanam tu vasudhaiv kutumbkam.”

This shloka suggests that only Narrow-minded people count that this is mine or of others. Broad-minded people consider the whole world as their family.

I have conceptualized to live in harmony with my environment and society.

May the sky be peaceful.

May the atmosphere be peaceful.

May the earth be peaceful

May the water be peaceful.

May the plants be peaceful.

May all the objects be peaceful.

May that peace come unto me.

But the above concept of Harmony is only possible when we are sensitive towards others feelings. All the problems exist because we have not developed enough sensitivity/empathy to live in harmony with different people having diverse set of values, living styles, language, religion etc. Here, I strongly feel:

Harmony is liked by all.

Then why is this religious wall?

Hindu, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians - all are children of one god.

Harmony is today’s need,

We have to develop this through our deeds.

If all people learn to live in harmony,

All wars in this world will then cease.

The world has become a small village. Physical and geographical boundaries don’t matter but we need remove our mental barriers also. We need to meet, communicate, understand each others’ needs and aspirations and above all respect each others’ point of views within overall system of social norms.

You gotta take some chances, You gotta risk losing it all, You gotta close your eyes and leap because it just might be worth the fall!

We all need something in life that drives us through the thick and thin and strengthens us with determination. That ‘something’, as I see it, is a passion within us. ‘Passion’ may be defined as ‘an intense desire for something’. And a very famous saying goes “Passion fuels Ambition”. From a superficial view, such words do seem hypothetical. But this drive within us becomes a necessity specially when we have something valuable placed at risk.

And what makes me talk about this? Well I, having dropped an year to prepare for the engineering entrance exams in 2010, imagine having some vague idea of what ‘risk’ and a ‘need for passion’ is about. I remember the time when I was still deciding on what course my life will follow this year- I guess it’s understood that it isn’t fun and games for anyone at all to sacrifice one year from his/her life right at the peak of shaping one’s career. But that’s what taking risks to try and gain something better is all about. It’s been truly said that often when you think about doing something for a long period of time, say jumping out of an airplane, you never end up doing it. It’s the spontaneity that makes it worth while. And that’s just how I spontaneously decided to jump off the plane, (drop an year, that is).

Well, let me not confine this topic to my sole personal case. To everyone who has taken some heart-driven decisions in life, the initial uncertainty and dilemma must be known. With the people around coming up with their suggestions (all out of concern mostly), sometimes there are so many voices in our head that we forget which of them is ours. Some song I can recall goes “It's hard enough to be what you are, harder to be what you're not. It's hard to know what you need to get, harder to know what you've got!” You know how while making important decisions, you have those moments where your whole life stretches out ahead of you like a forked road, and even as you choose one gritty path, you've got your eye on the other the whole time, certain that you're making a mistake? And when it becomes difficult to ascertain what we ourselves want, a passionate beginning is a far cry. Also, it certainly isn’t easy to go against all the ‘Do nots’ of the people and just stand out alone and follow your own will.

Through all this having a strong desire for something, even your smallest trivial goal, surely helps. As for the risks involved, that’s where the real adventure of it comes in. Annie Dillard has said “If we listened to our intellect, we'd never have a love affair. We'd never have a friendship. We'd never go into business, because we'd be too cynical. Well, that's nonsense. You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.” And then who says one needs to feel absolutely safe to be able to free oneself from all fears?

I do not dismiss the gravity involved in taking a ‘proper’ decision. It is pretty well known that it's not what's happening to someone now or what has happened in the past that determines who he/she shall be. Rather, it's people’s decisions regarding what things mean to them, and what they’re going to do about them that determines their course of life. And one can never really know if their decision about something was ‘Right’ or ‘Wrong’, till they’ve actually seen the results.

So the heart has its reasons that reason cannot know! Talking about myself, as practical as I like to pretend I am, I know that I am not ruled by any reason or pragmatism. Looking back at my life, many of my choices were purely choices made by the heart, neither governed by logic, nor influenced by the mind. A few of these were good choices, as it appears now. Some I’ve learned lessons from as well. The rest, I am still figuring out. So far, I do not wish I had been more logical at any point of time, but I do wish I had been more passionate in some cases. Here, I am in no way ruling out the importance of reason in our lives. As Benjamin Franklin rightly said “If passion drives you, let reason hold the reins;” because action without thought is only as disastrous as thought without action.

The decision been taken, the journey has only begun. The need for passion doesn’t come only for beginning a task. It is required right through the entire journey towards your goal. Every road has some hurdles to overcome. And it’s only human to stumble along the way. But all along, one needs to renew his/her passion everyday. Drawing inspiration from the words of Nancy Coey, “When work, commitment, and pleasure all become one and you reach that deep well where passion lives, nothing is impossible,” I thus hope and wish for passion in my life to drive me this year and in the years to come to wherever I deserve to be.

PS: I am not advocating dropping for students. My decisions have been subject to my own situations. And I still have to discover the rightness or wrongness of many of my decisions. I only hope to put across my views regarding passion in life. :)

SPILT MILK

I recently heard a story about a famous research scientist who had made several very important breakthroughs. He was being interviewed by a newspaper reporter who asked him why he thought he was able to be so much more creative than the average person. What set him so far apart from others???

He responded that, in his opinion, it all came from an experience with his mother that occurred when he was about two years old. He had been trying to remove a bottle of milk from the refrigerator when he lost his grip on the slippery bottle and it fell, spilling its contents all over the kitchen floor- a veritable sea of milk!!

When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of yelling at him, giving him a lecture, or punishing him, she said, "Robert, what a wonderful mess you have made!! I have rarely seen such a huge puddle of milk. Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up??"

Indeed , he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, "You knoe Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to clean it up and restore everything to its proper order. So , how would you like to do that?? We colud use a sponge, a towel or a mop. Which do you prefer?" He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the spilled milk.

His mother then said..you know , what we have here is a failed experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Let's go out in the backyard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it..The little boy learned that he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!!

This renoned scientist that remarked that it was at that moment that he knew he didn't need to be afraid to make mistakes.Instead he learned that mistakes were just opportunities for learning something new, which is after all, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment "doesn't work," we usually learn something valuable from it.

Wouldn't it be great if all parents would respond the way Robet's mother responded to him??

Once upon a time a married couple celebrated their 25^th marriage anniversary. They had become famous in the city for not having a single conflict in their period of 25 years. Local newspaper editors had gathered at the occasion to find out the secret of their well known "happy going marriage".

Editor: "Sir. It's amazingly unbelievable. How did you make this possible? "

Husband recalling his old honeymoon days said: " We had been to Shimla for honeymoon after marriage. Having selected the horse riding finally, we both started the ride on different horses. My horse was pretty okay but the horse on which my wife was riding seemed to be a crazy one.

On the way ahead, that horse jumped suddenly, making my wife topple over. Recovering her position from the ground, she patted the horse's back and said "This is your first time". She again climbed the horse and continued with the ride. After a while, it happened again. This time she again kept calm and said "This is your second time" and continued. When the horse dropped her third time, she silently took out the revolver from the purse and shot the horse dead !!

I shouted at my wife: "What did you do you psycho. You killed the poor animal. Are you crazy?" .She gave a silent look and said: "This is your first time!!!"."

Husband:"That's it. We are happy ever after. "

10. You can go anywhere you want if you look serious and carry a clipboard.
